PAC gym closes for six weeks to be resurfaced

The PAC gym will be closed for the first six weeks of the term. Workers are resurfacing the hardwood surface of both the small gym and the main gym. Athletics has made a new design for the floor.

Director of Department of Athletics and Recreational Services Judy McCrae said that the PAC gym was last resurfaced 19 years ago. She said that the rules for playing surfaces of sports have changed periodically and have been accommodated by temporarily modifying the lines with tape before matches. The project will cost about $50,000.

The main gym surface will feature:

  • A varsity basketball court with the words "Waterloo Warriors" and the Warrirors logo inside the baseline. The height of the letters will be four feet with the baseline being five feet.
  • A varsity volleyball court with a slightly darker surface (though still lighter than the old surface)
  • Two Campus Rec basketball courts
  • Six Campus Rec volleyball courts

The resurfacing work which began Monday 1 May is contracted out to Advantage Sport Inc. and is expected to be completed in six weeks if no problems are encountered. Spring convocation is scheduled to use the gym starting Wednesday 14 June which is six weeks and two days from the beginning of work.
