Council approves most service review recommendations

After more than five months since a committee presented the report on a review of Feds services, council considered the recommendations. Council had been waiting for the end of a conflict resolution between the Internal Administration Committee and each of The Womyn's Centre and GLOW.

Of 31 recommendations two did not pass, eight were amended and the rest passed unchanged. In passing recommendations council approved discontinuing two services, Wellness Centre and the Legal Resource Office. They approved changing the name of The Womyn's Centre to Women's Centre. None of those changes will actually occur unless changed in the by-laws, but council approval makes them more likely.

One of the more cointroversial recommendations that said GLOW, Gays and Lesbians of Waterloo, should, "Take on the task of engaging in dialogue with students who hold diverse views on pertinent contentious issues" did not pass. That recommendation received only one vote for.

Here is a review of the recommendations and how they were amended or passed:

The Imprint story says that Lo will work with the "satellite researcher":

When asked how he would avoid the same controversy as arose in January, Lo replied, "I don"t think you can really avoid being disliked by some people" especially when suggesting change " there are always going to be people who are unhappy.

"I will work with the satellite researcher very closely, hopefully that will reduce the amount of criticism," he added.

What a strange thing to say. I think it is pretty clear that he would have said executive researcher.
