The University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Guelph didn't sign on to the snubbing letter to Maclean's the 11 protesting university presidents made public on Monday.
"Waterloo is committed to participating but we're monitoring the situation as it unfolds," said Bob Truman, director of the office that prepares the data sent to Maclean's.
But although it's not Plan A, there is still a chance the University of Waterloo may pull out of this year's rankings, Truman said.
Maclean's has stated it will continue to include the non-participating universities in the rankings and will get the data with or without co-operation.
"We have a bit of a concern that Maclean's, if they go and get data from the non-participants from some other source, that the methodology might not be the same for all the institutions," Truman said.
"They might not be asking the same question or getting the same answer, so we're kind of worried there might be an apples-and-oranges kind of result."
For a school that puts so much emphasis on the ranking, I'm not surprised Waterloo is staying in. It will be interesting to see how schools rank based on whether they have supplied data or not.
It's interesting to see how the situation is similar in the US.
Princeton number 1 in college rankings
Many colleges criticize the rankings, but they take them seriously. The University of Chicago, facing complaints from alumni about its ranking, says this year it re-examined figures it was submitting in categories such as financial resources and concluded it was underreporting. The school's ranking shot up from 15th to No. 9.
