FEDERATION OF STUDENTS BOARD OF DIRECTORS TO CALL REFERENDUM ON BUS PASS

Non-refundable pass will be put to students in March 2007

WATERLOO, ON (January 22) - The Federation of Students Board of Directors
has committed to call a referendum on the issue of a Universal Bus Pass in
March, 2007. The unanimous decision was reached in response to clear student
interest in the issue and the need to more fully prepare the service and
logistical details necessary to implement a non-refundable bus pass.

"The Board of Directors has seen the desire of a growing number of students
to finally decide on the bus pass question,” said Renjie Butalid, Vice
President Administration and Finance of the Federation of Students. “Given
the sizeable support as demonstrated by a circulated petition and the
substantial financial implications of a bus pass, the Board is obliged to
give sufficient attention to the details of how the pass would work.”

While it has been suggested that Council could deal with this question in
February, it will take until early March to have the details needed to put
the question of a non-refundable pass to students in a referendum. Over the
next month, a service agreement will be further negotiated with Grand River
Transit. In addition, logistics for administering the bus pass will be
discussed with the University of Waterloo.

“Given the time constraints, the Board of Directors will do its best to
negotiate the most favourable deal for students,” added Board member Kate
Daley. “What is important, however, is that students will have a say this
term on whether or not they want a non-refundable bus pass.”

The Federation of Students represents the interests of approximately 22,000
full-time undergraduate students at the University of Waterloo.
